    Research Accomplishments
    • Provided evidence that delayed villous maturation is associated with evidence of chronic fetal hypoxia and with a higher concentration of amniotic fluid erythropoietin than in controls without delayed villous maturation.
    • Demonstrated that placentas of women with fetal death were forty-four times more likely to present disorders of villous maturation compared to placentas of those with normal pregnancy outcome suggesting that the burden of placental disorders of villous maturation lesions is substantial.
    • Described disorders of villous maturation to be present in nearly one-third of the cases of spontaneous preterm labor and showed that the association between delayed villous maturation and acute placental inflammation in spontaneous preterm labor as observed is more than serendipitous and has adaptive and survival value.
    • Demonstrated hypoxia, secondary to placental dysfunction, to be the mechanism of death in the majority of fetal deaths among structurally normal fetuses with ninety-one percent of hypoxic fetal deaths sustaining brain, myocardial or both brain and myocardial injuries in utero.
    • Discovered a placental tumor “Chorangioendothelioma” and provided its nomenclature.
    • Described the first case from the Indian subcontinent of Mardini–Nyhan association (LACHT syndrome: unilateral complete/partial lung agenesis, congenital cardiac defects, and ipsilateral thumb anomalies) with intrauterine fetal demise.
    • Described the first case series from the Indian subcontinent of congenital apple peel jejunal atresia with helical umbilical cord ulcers afflicting all female offspring in consecutive pregnancies in a single nonconsanguineous family with all pregnancies culminating in perinatal death.
    • Described capricious behavior of endophytic squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix with extensive lymphovascular invasion of the corpus uteri, both the fallopian tubes and bilateral ovarian deposits without involving either the endometrium or the tubal mucosa.
    • Determined that any vessel/band that courses from the peritoneal surface of the umbilicus towards the portal vein, is most likely representing persistent left vitelline vein; and that all cases of umbilical vein varix should be evaluated for possible thrombosis in the umbilical and portal veins and an abnormal course since a communication with portal vein would suggest persistent left vitelline vein and possible agenesis of ductus venosus. Failure to prenatally detect these anomalies may result in fetal hypoxemia, portal hypertension, thrombosis, and fetal death.
    • Demonstrated that Pallister-Hall syndrome (PHS), a pleiotropic autosomal-dominant malformation syndrome rarely presenting with genitourinary malformations such as hydrometrocolpos and/or vaginal atresia may succumb during pregnancy due to congenital corticotrophin deficiency in the pituitary gland.
